Classic French Toast

Golden-brown French toast with cinnamon and vanilla

Ingredients

  • 4 thick slices bread (preferably day-old)
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • Butter for cooking
  • Maple syrup for serving
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt
  2. Dip each bread slice in the mixture, coating both sides
  3. Heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat
  4. Cook bread slices until golden brown on both sides
  5. Dust with powdered sugar
  6. Serve with maple syrup and fresh berries if desired

Tips

  • Use slightly stale bread for best results
  • Don't soak the bread too long or it will fall apart
  • Keep warm in a low oven while cooking remaining slices
